"Citizen Bird is an enterprise creating a bird box that can operate off-grid to automatically collect data using video and mass sensors, for environmental education and citizen science.
Great tits and blue tits, readily breed in bird boxes and are a convenient study organism. Scientists at Oxford have recorded detailed life table history data for most birds in Wytham Woods for the last 70 years. Conversely, the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) coordinates nationwide nest recoding that provides distribution information but little else for most nests.
We want to combine the geographically extensive approach (BTO) with the data-intensive approach (Wytham), through the mass marketing of an instrumented ‘Citizen Bird’ box. This would provide important new insights on variation in life history varies across the different habitats and climates of the UK and internationally. This will include insights into the potential and actual impacts of climate change on our wild vertebrate fauna."
