Nature of Things is a creative technology project by REWILDlife that transforms live environmental data into interactive digital storytelling experiences, giving nature a voice through AI-powered chatbots. This innovative platform is designed to make complex conservation science accessible and emotionally engaging for the public, by allowing people to "chat" with animals and ecosystems in real time and to hear from beyond human perspectives.
The platform will launch with two key experiences:
● Social Species - a storytelling tool that uses live GPS tracking data from wildlife (such as migratory birds or reintroduced species) to create character-based chatbots. These chatbots allow users to follow an animal's journey through daily updates, environmental challenges, and survival stories. All told from the animal's perspective.
● Riverside Chat - an interactive chatbot powered by real-time environmental sensor data. Citizens can message a local river and receive conversational insights about its health, water quality, biodiversity, or pollution threats. Turning abstract environmental metrics into human-readable, relatable dialogue.
This project reimagines the outdated "Adopt-an-Animal" fundraising model by creating immersive, real-time storytelling experiences that can be deployed by conservation organisations, educators, and community campaigns. Instead of receiving a static info pack, supporters can build a relationship with a living animal or ecosystem, follow its ups and downs, and become emotionally invested in its survival.
Nature of Things brings together the power of space-enabled data (e.g. satellite and GPS tracking), conversational AI (using large language models), and narrative design (engaging, character-driven storytelling) to foster a deeper connection between people and nature.
Through this Growth Catalyst grant, we will develop and test minimum viable products (MVPs) for both Social Species and Riverside Chat, working in collaboration with partners such as Sussex Bay, the Ouse&Adur Rivers Trust, and the Great Bustard Group. We'll explore how storytelling can activate public interest, generate new fundraising opportunities for conservation groups, and give underused data a second life as a tool for empathy and environmental action.
At its core, Nature of Things is about changing the way we communicate with the natural world. By blending data with dialogue, we turn silent datasets into stories that speak and, in doing so, help people see themselves as part of nature, not apart from it.
