On The Mend was established by a physical rehabilitation patient, orthopaedic surgeon and physiotherapist in a bid to revolutionise the rehabilitation journey. The ambition is to improve patient adherence and experience, meanwhile providing clinicians with timely and consistent outcome data to improve service efficiency and timely intervention.
This project is the first in a range of approaches that we want to explore. It focusses on a fundamental aspect of self-care: health behaviour change and motivational factors.
A similar concept has been deployed within the private health insurance setting and proved extremely beneficial to both providers and consumers. High levels of adherence have been demonstrated, with improved health and wellbeing of staff and increased productivity at work. Despite this, the underlying concepts of intrinsic and extrinsic motivators to engage with a health and wellbeing programme have not yet been explored within musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Our approach has a triple aim: improve the patient experience, improve health outcomes and reduce the per capita cost of healthcare.
