Company description
The Thinking Pod Innovations develops technology designed to enable power electronic conversion in wide-gap band semi-conductors.
Advanced pacakaging
The Thinking Pod Innovations Ltd. (TTPi) is a start-up company focusing on innovative low-cost, power-dense solutions for power electronic conversion, in particular those employing wide band-gap semiconductors. Working in collaboration with the University of Nottingham Power Electronics Machines and Control Group, TTPi has developed a modular "Converter-in-Package" integration concept, which offers power densities of up to 200kW/litre together with power conversion technology for integrated drives.
Project impact
Engaged in product development in collaboration with Advance Electric Machines, PPM Power, RAM Innovations and Bentley Motors
Usage of silicon IGBT based power tiles and a resonant topology to minimise losses and compete with hard switched SiC converters to provide more cost effective high bandwidth automotive drivetrain power converter topologies.
Impacts include development and commercialization of ultra fast switching power electronic modules with closely integrated output filters. Foundations of the technology stemmed from UK Power Electronics Centre and other EPSRC grants

P3EP UK Supply Chain Project
1 Feb 2022 to 30 Nov 2024
The project "Pre-packaged Power Devices for PCB Embedded Power Electronics" (P3EP) develops a UK supply chain for PCB-embedded power systems with Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices. The P3EP supply chain will allow PEMD manufacturers to build converters with the highest power densities and it will allow UK power semiconductor companies to enter these markets. ...
OCTOPUS: Optimised Components, Test and simulatiOn toolkits for Powertrains which integrate Ultra high speed motor Solutions
1 Dec 2019 to 31 Mar 2023
"OCTOPUS builds on the success of previous Innovate UK project APEX. **Advanced Electric Motors Research** and **The Thinking Pod innovations** will focus optimising the integrated motor and power electronics 'drive' technology and further integrating with a new transmission and thermal management system to deliver the ultimate single unit e-axle solution...
APEX - Advanced Power Electronics for eXtreme e-machines
1 Jun 2018 to 31 Aug 2020
"APEX brings leading edge UK research in power electronics together with ultra-high speed, switched reluctance electric machine design and novel thermal management solutions, to deliver a breakthrough in electric drive systems suitable for high performance vehicles. The drive will be designed to exceed latest permanent magnet motor performance while remov...
Low-cost embedded heterogeneous-component manufacturing process for integrated power electronics
1 Sep 2017 to 31 Aug 2019
We will demonstrate a paradigm shift in the manufacture of electronic power conversion systems by achieving the true potential of wide band-gap switches in applications at power levels from 100s W to 100s kW. Power electronic converters are assembled using a mixture of surface mount technology for low-level electronics & hand/semi-automated assembly of th...
