PVD PALM will extend the capabilities of Polymer Additive Layer Manufacturing (P-ALM, more widely known as 3D Printing) by developing expertise and know how on the application of Thin Film coatings to their surfaces. Thin Film coatings applied by Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) are applied in vacuum processes, transporting materials at the atomic rate to the surface of a component with thicknesses less than 1 micron. The application of PVD coatings in this way can provide layers of Oxides, Carbides, Nitrides and metals to a surface to increase durability, provide optical improvements or electrical properties and are essential in most machined and cast materials used in challenging environments. PVD PALM will develop the understanding and processes required of the wide range of P-ALM processes from photoresins to FDM and stereolithography techniques and the wide array of materials such as Nylon, ABS, PP and PEAK to establish Light Coatings Ltd as a leading partner for coating services on P-ALM components and a chosen R&D partner for new product development in this area.
