Spinout profile
Company description
MoniRail develops an inertial measurement unit and data analysis tool for the rail sector, aiming to prevent faults by measuring train conditions and performance.
MoniRail is a new spin-out company from the Birmingham Centre for Rail Research & Education (BCRRE). Its initial focus is on commercialising an in-service train data analytics platform coupled with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) that enables continuous monitoring of track and train. The IMU can be used to collect data to monitor track geometry, ride comfort, and train condition and performance. The data analytics software platform converts data from the IMU into actionable condition information that predicts failures and allows for preventive maintenance by having a better understanding of the evolving condition of the assets.

Projects
Quantum Cable Detection and Monitoring
1 Jan 2026 to 31 Mar 2026
The project lead is MoniRail Ltd a specialist track condition monitoring company working in the rail sector it is working with the University of Sussex (UoS) as a subcontractor and they will provide the Quantum Intellectual Property and expertise to the project. The solution is seeking to utilise a 2nd generation Quantum Optically Pumped Magnetometer for ...
Advanced Ride Comfort Monitoring System - integration of noise, cabin pressure monitoring and vehicle dynamic modelling
1 Jan 2025 to 31 Mar 2025
MoniRail has developed and is currently testing the first cost effective in-service track geometry mesaurement system. These tests are currently underway with Eurostar and NetworkRail HighSpeed (NRHS) with a view to establishing whether the system can be effectively used for track Condition Based Maintenance (CBM). This project proposes to further develop...
Railway Quantum Inertial Navigation System for Condition Based Monitoring (Phase 2)
1 Jan 2024 to 31 Mar 2025
The aim of this project is to develop a Quantum-based navigation system for railways to address the issues arising from the loss of GNSS signal in tunnels. Our system will enhance positioning accuracy without relying on expensive infrastructure-based solutions and focus on demonstrating the condition based maintenance use-case. The project will create a h...

Portable Track Geometry Measurement System
1 Oct 2022 to 31 Mar 2023
Rail incidents can take many forms and can results in many different types of intervention from temporary speed restrictions to full track closures. Many incidents either result from or cause track damage and in order to remove any speed restrictions or track closures engineers need to be confident that the track is in a safe condition. It is therefore co...
Real-time AI enabled rail track inspection and analysis [RAPPID] - Resilience Fund Application
1 Dec 2021 to 31 Jan 2022
Current inspection of rail track defects utilises Network Rail's four Ultrasonic Testing Units (UTUs) that traverse the UK network, 64,000 miles of track, in 750 shifts per year. With a limitation of 30 miles per hour for rail track inspection, UTUs cannot meet the high demand and increased capacity of customers. Every day, 4.8 million people travel by tr...
Track and Ride Condition Correlation for Optimised Rail Maintenance
1 Jul 2021 to 31 Dec 2022
Regular, cost-effective collection of accurate track geometry and condition information by measurement of acceleration data from the train body and running-gear remains a key barrier to condition-based maintenance (CBM) approaches for rail-track maintenance. Adoption of CBM approaches could save \>£100M/yr in rail maintenance costs. Rail-track and vehicle...

Continuous railway track monitoring using passenger trains
1 Apr 2019 to 31 Mar 2021
This project looks to develop research undertaken over the last 10 years at the University of Birmingham into analysis of track data and its application towards predictive maintenance on the rail network. The project will develop commercially robust software and hardware that can collect and analyse track data to provide predictive track maintenance solut...
