There is a housing crisis in the UK, by the government's estimates we need to build 300 thousand houses a year. The world is also facing the interlinked problems of climate change and biodiversity loss. This means we need to use the land we have already built on more efficiently, to densify our villages, towns and cities so that we are meeting our need for good, vibrant places to live in a sustainable way. To leave space for nature, encourage walking, cycling and public transport and to reduce our dependence on cars. The intention of our project is to create a powerful new workflow to aid the future planning of our communities based on settlement patterns that are intrinsically familiar. The workflow is designed to bring procedural modelling utilised by the gaming industry into the architectural world. Based on real world rules and historical development it will generate alternative growth scenarios of settlements. With these alternative scenarios we can work alongside local communities and organisations and involve them in the Urban Design decision making process so that consensus can be built for future growth.
