By combining design with ground-breaking material research, The Home of Sustainable Things is pioneering "ReCinder Ceramics". A project aiming to convert challenging industrial waste into a primary material and high-quality goods for the market.
ReCinder Ceramics however, is not solely about the creation of sustainable products. It is about fostering collaboration, reducing environmental impact and promoting the transition towards a circular economy with focus on developing a locally produced sustainable homeware.
The material source consists of discarded, broken and defective fired ceramics, primarily a by-product from the ceramic producers. Annually, the UK generates over 32 million tonnes of fired scrap. Using waste as raw material will decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills, minimise material loss and reduce dependency on natural materials, while concurrently offering sustainable alternatives to everyday products traditionally manufactured in environmentally unfriendly ways. Waste materials will be sourced from a network of ceramic producers, capitalising on established relationships and scaling the supplier base as production grows.
The Home of Sustainable Things will introduce a range of tableware and tiles, followed by raw materials, including ceramic glazes. The range is intended to meet the needs of domestic, commercial and educational sectors.
