SmartWindowsTM is an innovative product solution that protects building occupants from external noise and air pollution, improves internal environmental quality and reduces waste heat loss. Through the use of internal & external sensors, and intelligent algorithms, SmartWindowsTM are able to automatically determine the optimum window position, shielding from external pollutions, reducing internal heat loss or allowing natural ventilation for cooling, protecting from detrimental health, well-being & quality of life effects of external parameters. Whether part of a new-build project or undertaking a retrofit project, SmartWindowsTM is able to fit all needs. The SmartWindowsTM project has already made significant strides, with a successful proof of concept funded by InnovateUK & RCDC internally. Now, the focus is on transitioning from the lab to the real world. In partnership with Portakabin and Loughborough University, a new prototype will be rigorously tested in live environments, determining proof-of-performance of the product and against building regulations related to overheating, ventilation, and acoustics.

Collaborative R&D
Decarbonisation is required for a majority of estate portfolios within the UK and worldwide to enable a net zero carbon future. The knowledge of how best to upgrade in building portfolios acts as a preventive barrier in bringing about change. The current process for building upgrades is costly and time intensive requiring consultation and review from specialist sustainability consultants prior to the design works. The proposed product is a web-based tool that is designed to quickly and efficiently provide information to key decision makers as to how best to decarbonise their building portfolios. The product is designed to reduce the impact of the technical and financial barriers that are currently in place. It will allow for the development of high-level decarbonisation strategies across both large and small estates. This can both enable these decarbonisation projects to be carried out, and also provide information on current and likely emissions from emissions.

Grant for R&D
The project aims to deliver a prototype of the new innovative technology, Smart Windows, which is being developed with the aim of providing quieter, healthier and more comfortable spaces in buildings through the use of automatically controlled windows. These windows would be able to control the temperature inside buildings, provide cleaner air and improve the acoustic comfort, while also requiring less energy than a standard mechanical air conditioning system. Examples of properties particularly well suited for Smart Windows include ones near airports, railways, and busy roads, as well as residential properties, schools and offices, which are often naturally ventilated.
