Climate change is one of the biggest threats that life on earth has ever faced. The slow, but dangerous, accumulation of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere has already promoted extreme weather conditions across the globe, precipitating widespread drought, flooding, mass population displacement and species extinction. The U.K. government has set an ambitious goal of reducing 78% of its national emissions by 2035 and has introduced mandatory emissions measurement and reporting across the economy by 2025\. But how do small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) -- comprising 99.9% of U.K. businesses -- measure and understand their emissions without in-house sustainability expertise or expensive, outsourced consultants? How do large corporations, who are responsible for their suppliers' emissions, measure and evaluate their (SME) supply chain to meet emissions targets? Most importantly, how will these companies actually reduce their emissions without relying on offsetting? The first step to reduce emissions is measuring the actual processes used to create goods and provide services. However, current solutions are either too expensive or, if affordable, too limited in scope to be practical. To tackle this issue, Neutreeno is developing a novel emissions platform using industry standard engineering concepts to help companies affordably calculate the footprint of their carbon emissions for reporting and mitigation. Designed to help companies reduce emissions and production costs simultaneously, it debunks the idea that "going green" means higher costs. This project supports the development of our advanced carbon calculator to make the low-carbon transition cheaper, faster and more equitable. Neutreeno is a small Cambridge-based business leveraging the University's technical knowledge and expertise comprised of climate scientists and engineers transitioning industry to real (not net) zero. With support from Innovate UK, Neutreeno will be able to achieve widespread impact, empowering people and businesses across multiple sectors reduce their carbon footprint.
