Finchetto has developed the world's first entirely passive ethernet network switch. The first prototype was funded by an InnovateUK SMART grant and delivers 40x lower latency, rate-unlimited switching (there is no electronic switching control so switching is done at the speed of the surrounding transceivers), all for 26x lower power than state-of-the-art. This SBRI grant seeks to take this TRL6 level technology and in collaboration with design partner, British Telecom (BT), looks to understand and perform a full techno-economic analysis of all use cases within the UK's telecommunications network infrastructure. Then, based on BT's stringent product requirements, Finchetto will develop the world's first passive optical telecommunications switch to deliver the future of high-speed, low power, low maintenance, secure optical networks. The switch is applicable to multiple network segments e.g. multi tenanted buildings, campuses, private 5G backhaul, OpenRan, Smartcities, rural/dense urban broadband and will deliver a faster, more sustainable telecommunications infrastructure. The market opportunity is currently forecast at £41bn.

Finchetto is a UK-based photonic computation SME. Data centres account for around 2% of global electricity consumption, and usage is growing rapidly, with a 10-fold increase expected by 2050\. Almost a quarter of this energy use is attributable to network switches. The current world-leading switches are coupled with optical transceivers to improve data processing speed. However, delays occur in optoelectrical conversion, and the high-energy requirements contribute significantly to global emissions. Switch energy consumption can be reduced by 90% by eliminating this optoelectrical conversion. Addressing this problem would reduce CO2e by 256M tonnes and reduce data centre running costs by around £265B. Finchetto is developing a faster, lower-energy, all-optical network switch that replaces existing state-of-the-art optoelectronic switches to deliver faster and more sustainable data networking infrastructure. The solution can reduce data centre switch energy consumption by up to 90%, saving an estimated 10 MT of CO2e in the UK. This represents 5% of the entire UK carbon reduction target for 2032 as outlined in the government's 10-Point Plan. By adopting Finchetto's product, data centre customers can reduce costs, reduce emissions, and provide performance improvements to end-users that increase competitive advantage. Finchetto will enable faster, more sustainable computation using light. By improving compute performance, AI models can manipulate larger datasets which will deliver data insights for advances in such areas as healthcare and vehicle safety.
