BluGreens is an impact-driven company pioneering a sustainable and integrated seaweed farming model in the UK. This approach addresses the challenges faced by the nascent UK seaweed farming industry and the growing global demand for sustainable agricultural inputs. The core of BluGreens' strategy involves: Collaborating with harbours to leverage existing marine infrastructure, such as moorings and quayside access, for inshore seaweed cultivation during the off-season (October to May). This reduces costs and mitigates competition for ocean space. The model aims to work closely with harbours around the country, employing local operators at each site. It aims to ensure farming units remain small and diversifies local employment. Developing an innovative value-added product called "Kelpful Biostimulant," which is a microbe-fermented seaweed extract with valorised amino acids. This product directly fills a significant market gap by combining sustainably sourced seaweed, advanced microbial fermentation, and the valorisation of a high-volume industrial by-product. Seaweed biostimulants such as BluGreens "Kelpful Biostimulant" offer a promising solution to reduce the reliance on synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizers in agriculture, contributing to more sustainable farming practices. The extensive use of synthetic N fertilizers in conventional agriculture leads to significant environmental pollution through N losses to waterways and groundwater and contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from both production and denitrification processes in the soil. Only about 30--50% of applied N fertilizer is typically taken up by crops, with cereals exhibiting an even lower uptake of 36--42%. Improving nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is therefore crucial for food security and mitigating environmental damage. BluGreens' unique product offers unparalleled sustainability, enhanced efficacy, and cost-effective sourcing, providing a strong competitive edge. The company aims to scale its kelp cultivation from 1.5 tonnes in 2025 to over 15 tonnes in 2026 and achieve sales of \>30,000 litres/annum of Kelpful Biostimulant. Beyond commercial viability, BluGreens is committed to improving water quality through nutrient absorption into farmed kelp, supporting marine biodiversity, and creating new economic opportunities and income diversification for coastal communities.
