Foundation Industries are low margin energy intensive industries which face significant challenges from net zero targets and sustainability commitments. The sector is traditionally viewed as a 'hard to abate' sector with few options available to reduce carbon emissions in the short term. Options generally put forward such as carbon capture and storage are decades away from being viable at scale and require major capital investment in new infrastructure which increases costs and damages the competitiveness of these industries. In order to address this industry need for low Capex solutions that can reduce emissions immediately Carbon Re has developed an Artificial Intelligence powered platform that makes recommendations to the plant operator as to how to increase the energy efficiency of manufacture. Research by Co-Founder Dr. Daniel Summerbell has shown that energy efficiency in cement manufacture can vary by as much as 8% between the best and average day's performance. This grant would fund feasibility studies in partnership with Steel and Glass manufacturers to evaluate the savings achievable using the platform in these other foundation industries.
