Our lives are increasingly filled with distractions. We feel constantly torn between calls, notifications, alerts and other digital noise. We are left unable to escape from these distractions and this takes a toll on our overall wellbeing.
I found that practicing drum rudiments, the "DNA" of percussion on a drum practice pad, gave me solace from these distractions. This helped with concentration, focus and left me feeling more connected and present.
There were some detractors to this practice however. Needing to set the metronome and make an active decision on the next exercise, along with no feedback of progress and needing to log what I did all caused friction to this otherwise relaxing experience.
This left me wondering if there is a better solution. This project is the result of this.
The project aims to take a holistic, self-managed approach to the monitoring and improvement of wellbeing via a rhythm-based VR experience. It will place the player in a zen-like temple environment, or a Japanese "Shinrinyoku" style forest-bathing space. Here, the player will be provided with rhythm and breathing exercises that train these rudimentary drumming patterns by using music-game mechanics. This takes the form of beats, levels, hits and combos, in a vein similar to games such as Beat Saber or Supernatural. The player becomes more present and focused, whilst improving their breathing, rhythm and concentration.
Manual metronome setting and exercise selection are no longer present to tax the user because the software intelligently calibrates the metronome, logs player progress and sets challenges for them. This progress is tracked and presented in a user-friendly manner. You will be able to see not just how many beats you hit and at what speed, but also self-assess how your wellbeing is improving over time via a journaling feature.
Here are the benefits of all this:
* Improved Concentration and Reaction Skills
* Improve Rhythm and Coordination
* Improved Breathing
* Reduced Anxiety
* A log of your progress
The player can interact with this via hand motion, tapping and voice.
The application will be accessible on standard, commercially available mobile-phones and VR headsets.
We've built this experience for the following in mind:
* Self-directed music learners
* Game Players
* Music Therapists
* Percussion Teachers
* Anyone desiring to improve their overall wellbeing and mindfulness
Nothing like this is out there on the market right now. Let our new, VR-based approach relax, calm and entertain you to better wellbeing!
