Scaling Fatima, a groundbreaking ethical research platform
Laura is a global innovation leader. She has built and led teams in some of the world's hardest to operate geographies. Laura is an advocate and practitioner of pioneering new ways to ensure the world's most marginalised voices are heard and listened to. Safely, ethically and efficiently. The digital systems Laura has created to make this happen have positively impacted over 20 million people globally.
Today, Laura is CEO of Here I Am, a global digital social impact studio, creating ground-breaking digital products and services for some of the world's leading development organisations.
In August 2020, Laura and her team launched Fatima, an ethical research platform designed to reach and understand anyone, anywhere. Data is ethically collected, securely stored and rapidly analysed, enabling fast decision making and action.
Fatima's mission is to:
1. Enable every person in the world to have their voice heard, and listened to
2. Create an experience where the participant feels safe, comfortable and in control
3. Use the information shared to create a better world for them, and those around them.
Since launch, Fatima has been used by a small number of founding partners: CARE International in Africa, Asia and Latin America to understand the needs of marginalised women in crisis zones, Malala Fund in Latin America, Africa and Asia to understand barriers to education for marginalised girls, a large scale 4000 person study with Youth Endowment Fund in the UK to understand drivers of violent behaviour among young people, and by CARE and the [United Nations to understand the needs of vulnerable people in Ukraine.][0]
Following two years of continuous improvement, Fatima is now ready to evolve into a public, commercial platform. With this award, Laura and her team will strive to create a brand new automated onboarding and support process, designed to meet and accommodate the psychological and environmental limitations that its users may be facing - particularly those in crisis zones, working under extreme stress in low connectivity environments.
In the future, Here I Am imagine that Fatima is the default research platform used by both commercial and not-for-profit organisations in the UK and globally to conduct ethical research. Given the increased awareness of people having their data used and sold without their consent, finding ways to conduct research ethically is a concern in both the commercial and not-for-profit sectors. The ambition is to ensure Fatima can meet this rising demand.
