Enormous amounts of single-use plastics from research and healthcare are sent to landfills or incineration due to a lack of know-how and scalable technologies. However, with social and legislative pressure, a focus on waste management and recycling has become increasingly more incentivised. LabCycle offers a solution to sort, decontaminate and recycle/ upcycle these single-use laboratory plastics, and to create a step-change in the adoption of circular economy approaches in the research sectors. With the increasing demands from research laboratories around the UK to recycle their single use laboratory plastics, LabCycle intends to scale up quickly to help research laboratories to reach their sustainable goals. The approach is integrating the decontamination process into one automated machine which can be operated by trained personnel. This project aims to design and build the prototype of the automated decontamination system, followed by testing and optimisation to ensure the smooth running and efficacy of the machine.
