Ganwave Ltd is developing an intelligent, energy-efficient microwave generator using the latest gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology, designed to meet the needs of modern industrial processing.
Microwave heating is widely used in industries such as food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, materials treatment, packaging, and electronics. However, most industrial systems today still rely on outdated magnetron-based microwave sources, which are inefficient, difficult to control, short-lived, and unsuitable for integration into smart, automated manufacturing environments.
Ganwave's innovation is a 5kW solid-state microwave generator, built by combining multiple lower-power modules into a single, compact system that is fully digitally controlled. This new platform enables precise control of frequency, phase, and power - something magnetron systems cannot achieve - opening the door to much greater energy efficiency and process consistency.
The system will be designed to automatically adjust its operating parameters in real time, adapting to the product being processed to maximise energy transfer and minimise waste. This is made possible by incorporating digital control and intelligent algorithms, which can dynamically tune the system for optimal performance. The use of GaN semiconductor technology makes the system highly efficient, compact, and robust, with a much longer operational life than traditional solutions (25 year+ lifetime compared to 2/3 years for magnetrons).
The result will be a new class of modular, scalable microwave generators that offer manufacturers better control, lower energy costs, and more sustainable processes. By enabling improved heating precision and repeatability, the technology can support innovation in sectors such as, food cooking & drying, pasteurisation, pharma sterilisation, composite curing, agricultural processing and advanced materials production.
This project supports the UK's ambitions in semiconductor technology, clean energy, and industrial digitisation, aligning closely with national goals for decarbonisation and advanced manufacturing. It will help reduce reliance on older, imported microwave components and enable new product development within the UK's industrial and electronics supply chains.
Ganwave will retain and commercialise the innovation as part of its ongoing commitment to pioneering solid-state microwave solutions, creating value through licensing, OEM partnerships, and direct system sales. The project is supported by key UK collaborators and will serve as a foundation for further industrial growth and export potential.
