UK lunch-on-the-go generates 11 billion pieces of single-use packaging waste each year (Hubbub). Today, unless people bring their own reusable container for lunch, they inevitably generate single-use packaging waste from most to-go meals. Takeaways have become a workplace standard and are a major component of the office waste stream, despite 8 in 10 UK consumers trying to reduce their plastic waste (Guardian). As employees return-to-work in the wake of COVID, there is an unprecedented opportunity to change behaviours and redefine consumption norms within offices. junee is tackling the single-use takeaway packaging challenge by making reuse as easy as single-use. junee partners with companies and restaurants to create a convenient borrow-and-return system of reusable containers that employees can use during their workday lunch. In this project, junee will research and develop innovative tech and reverse logistics processes that will enable a transition from single-use packaging to reusable packaging for lunchtime takeaways and beyond.
