High efficiency, high performance Electric Drive Units (EDUs) are critical to the continued success of Electric Vehicles. The Excellence in Conceptual Evolution of Electric Drives (ExCEED) project is an R&D project to develop a next generation EDU 'toolkit' a modular family of machines, inverters and transmissions for future JLR vehicle platforms. The next generation EDU 'toolkit' will be enabled by innovations in: * next generation emachine oil cooling circuit. * new lubricant formulation for best viscosity, performance and material compatibility. * reduced heavy rare earth permanent magnet content. * a novel and patented transmission layout. * multi-disciplinary and multi attribute EDU housing topology optimisation. * novel power electronic control scheme to a motor phase winding-access integrated boost charging. The ExCEED project will be supported by a fully integrated consortium including JLR (lead), Lubrizol, ZeBeyond, SEMD, Universities of Leeds, Newcastle and Nottingham. The project will create additional impact beyond JLR for industry partners to secure more market penetration for new digital tools for sustainability and establishing niche-volume electric machine production supply routes and anchors IP in the UK for exploitation.
