GetZero is an educational and behaviour change app designed to reduce household emissions through a 'digital twin' of the home.
The GetZero project will be piloted in UK schools from Autumn 2022\. Students can trial emission reduction ideas through a digital twin of their home before completing real-world challenges with their families and classmates. The GetZero app can be a standalone home learning tool, or supported and delivered by teachers as part of curriculum based subjects, providing the missing link between climate education and measurable action.
Our pilot will be delivered in partnership with the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust (CSTT). The CSTT introduces young people to careers in the built environment. In two years, its schools programme has already reached over 300 teachers and 30,000 students. GetZero will support CSTT to deliver a wider engagement in schools and provide sustainability project-based learning as part of their current offering. We expect to be able to reach over 100,000 students in secondary schools in the next three years.
Only 6% of students understand that the built environment is something they can engage in improving. Few realise that it accounts for more than 40% of CO2 emissions and that they have the ability to start to address that. Engaging students early in tangible, evidence-driven improvements in their home increases the likelihood of them taking further emission reducing actions: both at home and in their career.
