Nearly 1 in 7 women in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer within their lifetime and 31 women die of it every single day. However, there is a 93% chance of survival if diagnosed early, which is why regular breast self-checks are vital. but no avenues for women to monitor their breast health. Sadly, women are often dependent on demonstrations, tutorials and pamphlets, all proposing different methods. Lack of proper guidance and feedback results in non-adherence to self-checks. Many women struggle to interpret what they feel in their breasts hence deterring them from doing regular checks. Dotplot aims to eliminate the guesswork and encourage adherence to a regular routine.
Dotplot is a consumer-facing at-home breast health monitoring tool designed to help women look after their breasts with confidence. It combines a handheld device and software that is capable of reading, locating and recording breast health data. Its patent-pending technology guides women through breast self-checks on a monthly basis and creates month-by-month comparisons of breast tissue. This helps to flag the development of abnormalities as early as possible and ensure women reach their GPs in time.
With Innovate UK's Design Foundations, Dotplot will be able to refine and test its positioning capability and integrate this with its detection system to create the MVP.

With Innovate UK's Design Foundations, Dotplot will be able to conduct crucial user research with one of the most valuable customer segments: breast cancer survivors. This will involve validating key assumptions regarding the needs, behaviours and experiences of this user group and identifying what is required to drive adoption of the product. The team will use the gathered insights to translate them into tailored product offerings and identify specific routes to market for breast cancer survivors. These activities will also enable them to build strong customer relationships.
The project approach relies on the principles of the Double Diamond and various design tools will be utilised during the process. Alongside co-creation, various behavioural sciences tools will be employed to understand how to build adherence to routine checks.

With Innovate UK's Fast Start: Innovation grant, Dotplot will be able to develop one of its core features which is locating the position of the handheld device when held against the torso and providing on-screen feedback and guidance within the mobile application.
The aim is to empower women to engage with their breast health on a routine basis and in turn, reduce the number of deaths per incidence of breast cancer.
