Plastic-packaging is responsible for 3.8% of global greenhouse-gas emissions. One Good Thing (OGT) is a highly innovative engineering-startup pioneering the development of a novel edible-coating applicator machine for snack-bars to eliminate the use of plastic-packaging using their proprietary edible-film. This ECA machine will have the potential to extend to other products in the future. OGT is seeking to scale-up its edible-coating applicator machine towards industrial-applications with the intention of becoming the next go-to plastic-free packaging (edible-coating) standard within the fast-moving consumer-goods industry. OGT offers a reduced-carbon solution, significantly improving on current edible-coating propositions as it is hygienic, hypoallergenic, durable against moisture and suitable for foods susceptible to rapid deterioration. OGT was founded specifically to reduce the impact of plastics on the planet, with a particular focus on reducing litter and non-biodegradable wrappers. OGT's special coating removes the need for plastic packaging altogether and is made of 100% raw cold-pressed, low-carbon footprint ingredients so that as much flavour and nutrition can be captured as possible. This means that less energy is consumed in comparison to other processes when being manufactured. Other edible-coatings (polysaccharides/protein/lipids) limit food-quality and aren't transferable to food products such as snack-bars. The primary consumer motivations underpinning this opportunity include demand for: * Cost-effective, environmentally-friendly alternative to plastic-packaging * Streamlined, scaled-up manufacturing process which can be used for snack bars OGT is creating a world-first edible-film applicator machine to scale-up production capabilities that don't currently exist for the purposes of high-volume snack-bar manufacturing. This capability will serve industry and customer needs by reducing plastics. This project supports the UK government's ambition in reducing carbon-emissions from plastic-production processes and remove/eliminate plastic-use. This project will bring significant social and economic benefits to the UK, and globally, and will further establish the UK as a leader in the sustainable-packaging market.
