The climate crisis requires new ways of doing business. An estimated 80% of a product's environmental impact is decided at the design phase. Modular product architecture has long been touted as a more sustainable means of design and production, but commercial implementation lags behind. This project aims to leverage first-in-class product search data to develop and commercialise more sustainably designed products.
This project will focus on a product category native to its lead applicant, the design and production of professional bags. The project consists of three phases: 1) We will collect and synthesise nuanced customer data to produce a brief for a modular range of products, 2) We will design and prototype a small product range using modular product architecture 3) We will design for manufacturing in collaboration with a local UK factory and commercialise our product line with a user-centric, e-commerce experience.
Our vision is to inspire and enable the design and production of products which are of higher quality, desirability, and lower-impact. This methodology will ultimately be open sourced and applicable across numerous product categories, fuelling the urgent transition from overproduction to sustainable co-creation.
