Uncommon is a digital platform guiding neurodivergent families through life, well-being, and the transition into adulthood.
We are a neurodivergent team of mental health experts, educators, innovators and parents.
We provide transdiagnostic mental health support tailored to the neurodivergent community, a rarity in both health services and commercial markets.
Our current MVP developed during Jan-August this year is a six-week peer-facilitated psycho-educational course for groups of 10-12\. The course focuses on boosting young people's understanding of neurodivergent strengths and equips young people and families with tools to manage their wellbeing through psycho-education and peer support.
So far we have supported hundreds families through our course and webinars, with 80% of users reporting improvements in understanding of their neurodivergence, knowledge of self-management tools and improved connectedness with others like them.
Through our proposed project we will:
1.Extend our curriculum so we are better able to support the range of challenges young neurodivergent people face and
2.Improve the accessibility and scaleability of our psycho-educational support and our ability to meet the unique communication and learning needs of neurodivergent learners by prototyping and test a range of 'micro-learning-components' including recorded content, games and peer-to-peer learning formats
3.Develop and test a prototype app to support scale-up, creating custom accessible interfaces that embed successful micro-learning components and curriculum and support the unique learning needs of neurodivergent users
What's the design innovation?
* Our platform uniquely supports both young people and parents simultaneously, guiding families through complex journeys.
* Other models focus exclusively on 'impairment', but these difficulties should not define neurodivergent people. We use a strengths-based approach, nurturing neurodivergent interests and strengths.
* Unlike most services that isolate support for families or individuals, our approach is peer-to-peer and role-model-led, fostering connections among young people and providing role models and tools for success.
* We offer transdiagnostic support for various neurodivergent traits, addressing the overlap of multiple conditions.
* Recognizing the prevalence of multiple diagnoses among neurodivergent individuals (ADHD, autism, anxiety, demand-avoidance, and sensory processing disorders) we leverage technology to personalise curriculum and learning tools in order to support complex.
* While other services are designed by neuro-typical experts, we are building the first platform by and for neurodivergent people.
* Communication difficulties often hinder neurodivergent individuals from accessing care. We are committed to creating the first learning support product accommodating diverse communication needs needs of highly anxious, non-verbal and demand-avoidant adolescents.
