Historically, retail markets have been an attractive, reliable feature of high streets, providing vital support to local economies, boosting business and providing jobs. However, the last twenty years have seen significant decline in high street shopping, which has reduced footfall and revenue. At the same time, many markets have lacked strong leadership and management, resulting in retailers leaving the industry. Family members are also choosing not to join or take over the businesses leading to a lack of next generation retailers.
The High Street Experts have worked with local authorities, market operators and traders across the East Midlands for over ten years, successfully revitalising markets through planning, advice, training and support. They will partner with design experts Nightingale Design Research to explore how they can grow their business and provide the benefit of their expertise to a wider range of markets through the design of support and tools that fit the needs of all aspects of the market system - local authorities, market operators, market traders and shoppers.
In this project they will carry out a discovery to find out what makes a successful market in terms of factors such as layout and mix of traders. They will also interview traders, operators and shoppers to understand what they need in order for markets to thrive. The High Street Experts and Nightingale will collaboratively draw out insights from this research to understand what types of tools might support the different user groups, then design, test and iterate a prototype based on this. The project team will then work together to plan next steps for the development and commercialisation of the product.
Providing local authorities and market operators with the tools they need to plan and manage successful markets will result in more lively high streets filled with shoppers enjoying the products their region has to offer. Local businesses will have more opportunity to develop and grow and more sustainable shopping habits will be encouraged. Other businesses will benefit from more footfall, revitalising high streets and attracting a greater range of options for local shopping.
