Metal components in buildings are _mass produced_, homogenous elements that are typically overdesigned to meet a large range of use conditions. This project investigates the use of generative design towards creating _mass customised_, 3D printed metal building elements with reduced mass and in consequence lower embodied carbon. The aim is to design, test, protype and pilot three demonstrator parts with minimal embodied carbon and obtain certification for use in buildings for at least one of these parts. The objective is to showcase the viability and benefits of generative design to architects, designers, engineers, and construction companies aiming to achieve sustainable accreditations in the buildings that they design and build. The outcome will be a spin-off company specialising in the generative design and certification of sustainable metal building components. We anticipate that the use of this new range of sustainable products in buildings will instigate urgently needed carbon reductions and have a real-world impact on the environment.
