Grant for R&D
The project is the development and construction of a commercial Electrodynamic Balance (EDB), for the levitation and characterisation of single aerosol particles of sizes ~1-100 µm. An EDB levitates individual droplets or particles using an electric field. Various measurements may be made on the particle to measure its size, composition, structure, and density. EDB technology has been validated in academic research, but no commercial, standardised tool exists. This project aims to transfer the technology from academia to commercial research and development. The main objectives of the project are to produce a tool that: \* Provides data in a standardised form, ready and accessible for interpretation by industry. \* Is self-contained, safe, robust, and benchmarked sufficiently for use in industrial laboratories. \* May be used without repeated and extensive calibration or set up; 'plug and play' operation. \* Is easy to use for non-specialist scientists -- does not require mechanical, electronic or software expertise to use.
