Based on a true story, and featuring real diary entries, The Quiet Things is an auto-biographical narrative game from BAFTA Breakthrough Alyx Jones, and her team at Silver Script Games. We are making this game with the aim of opening conversation about the more taboo aspects of mental health, especially the impact childhood abuse has on a person. Players will explore the world through Alice's eyes, and collect objects and diary entries whilst moving through rooms of her childhood home and beyond. The game carries the reality of abuse on its shoulders and the impact it can have on a young mind. You don't have to be a hardcore, seasoned gamer to jump into Alice's world -- the walking simulator element of the game will allow you to traverse the world with ease regardless of your ability. This game is an auto-biography. The story is real, but names and places have been changed to protect the identity of everyone involved. Like many teenagers keeping a diary, some of the most innermost thoughts and feelings were written down, in a raw but honest expression of day to day life. The diary entries in the game you read are real. The narrative starts with Alice, at the age of 8 and follows her life through to late teen years. As with many young people who suffer from abuse, this leads to her running away, struggling with homelessness and trying to make sense of what has happened, in order to find hope for the future. As a nation we often shy away from conversations around mental health, such as depression, despite the huge number of people who struggle with it. It's estimated that 1 in 10 young people self harm. In just England alone, there were on average 14 suicides every single day (and even more attempts). It's ok to talk about these things, and we want to tackle those subjects head on, with the creation of our game.
