Ever argued over whose turn it is to take out the bins? Fairshare is for you. Fairshare is a start-up that helps households split chores simply. Our mission is to transform home lives, rejuvenate relationships, and advance gender equity. Our approach incorporates four pillars: perceive all the physical and mental load to run a home, plan how you would like to share it, practice what you have planned, and praise everyone's contributions. Our product is a mobile app that simplifies sharing housework - like Splitwise for group expenses, but for chores. It has four key benefits. First, "outsourcing nagging" reduces resentment, arguments and stress. Second, when users agree mutually acceptable standards, no effort is wasted and people regain time to spend on things, and with people, they love. Third, mental load is minimised as Fairshare keeps track of tasks, when they are due, and who by, so no single person has to remember. Finally, Fairshare encourages equity, as tasks are set up to alternate between people by default. Unlike existing apps on the market, Fairshare's innovative approach takes the chore out of doing chores, rather than overwhelming users or adding to the plates of the already-overburdened. We transform people's homes through incremental change, using a validated sequence of low-effort steps. We start with helping households share the simplest, visible routine tasks, like taking out the bins, and work up to the more challenging invisible responsibilities, like meal planning and monitoring household essentials. Our gender-neutral mobile app uses quick quizzes to factor in people's different standards and individual preferences, and incorporates nudges, notifications and gamification to effect real behaviour change that sticks, in a constructive and positive way. Our approach is informed by primary research and decades of work studying intrahousehold negotiations by world-leading academics on our team and advisory board. Alongside the app, Fairshare works with large organisations such as universities, charities and companies to raise awareness of the issue of inequity in domestic labour through talks and training.
