WorkBoat Wise Ltd (WBW) is developing an AI-powered digital marketplace to transform how workboat vessels are chartered in the UK and internationally. The platform directly connects vessel owners with charterers, streamlining communication and eliminating the inefficiencies of the traditional broker-led model that currently dominates the sector. This Innovate UK-funded project will enhance the existing platform by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse historical request-for-quotation (RFQ) data alongside live AIS vessel positioning. These AI models will assign confidence levels to determine whether vessels have undertaken specific jobs, enabling WBW to move from a flat annual subscription model to a commission-based fee structure. This brings the platform in line with conventional brokerage models---while delivering greater transparency, automation, and scalability. Through key partnerships (with trusted subcontractors), WBW will deploy machine learning and natural language processing tools to interpret RFQs, track vessel activity, and automate post-hire attribution. This marks a groundbreaking shift in the workboat chartering industry. By charging fees only when value is delivered, the platform reduces costs for charterers and improves revenue potential for vessel owners. The project also supports the growth of the Great South West marine cluster by enabling smarter vessel deployment, reducing unnecessary transits, and lowering emissions through data-driven decision-making. If successful, the model can be scaled and exported initially across the UK and furrther European workboat markets and adapted for use in wider commercial vessel chartering sectors. It lays the foundation for exporting UK-developed maritime AI and digital services globally. With the platform architecture already largely complete and operational, this project will serve as a live demonstrator of the AI functionality and its commercial potential---enabling a scalable, environmentally efficient, and digitally enabled future for vessel brokerage.
