Shaded is a new, demountable external awning that can be easily fixed from inside by a single person. In a global +2C warming scenario, the UK faces a 30% increase in the number of hot days\*. The majority of people and buildings in cities are unprepared for this reality. Shaded provides an easy and affordable way to keep homes cool, future proofing against the climate emergency.
External awnings are used for passive cooling around the world. Despite being extremely effective at reducing solar heat gain (up to 75% reduction for west facing windows, 60% for south\*), they are rarely seen in the UK. External shades aren't commonplace because the need for them has not previously existed. New architectural principles must be embraced as climate change intensifies.
The construction and planning industries are slow to react to changing environmental conditions. Discussions on thermal comfort are rarely at the forefront of architectural debate. Housing in the UK has been designed with the main concern of heating, not cooling. The introduction of "Part O: Overheating" in June 2022 finally enshrined the prevention of overheating risk in the building regulations.
Building regulations mainly deal with new construction, however. The nation's building stock is dated and ill-equipped to deal with increasing periods of extreme heat. My innovation targets homes like mine -- old terrace houses with sash windows that populate the UK's streets.
The idea for Shaded came about from brainstorming ways I could keep cool in my own home after the 2022 heatwaves. Shaded works with sash windows that open from the bottom and top. Pull the top leaf of the sash down, attach the awning to the window, and push it back up. Shaded is designed to be taken on and off with ease, so homeowners and private and social renters alike can stay shaded when they need to.
If successful, I would use the full Innovate UK package of support to lay the foundation of my business. Using my background in design and project management, I would iterate and test my ideas to create a working prototype, connect with manufacturers, and create a brand identity. With support from Innovate UK, I would build a business plan, better understand funding and finance options, and establish a marketing and sales strategy to ultimately protect people across the UK from overheating risk.
