An Audie is a new, cinematic sound experience: like a movie without a screen, it is a long-form, narrative format that takes the listener on a journey through music, orchestration, sound design, character dialogue, narration and live action scenes. It's a 'virtual experience' where the main vehicle for storytelling is a listener's imagination. Like other immersive experiences, the Audie is an emotive and exciting adventure, offering new worlds, realities and possibilities for the listener to create, explore and enjoy in their imagination. Every experience is unique, as there is no screen or visual to confine the user experience. However, like other immersive experiences, there are thresholds at which a listener can be overwhelmed, confused or broken out of the immersive experience by the quality, design and intensity of the sensory stimulation that can compromise listener experience - which we very much want to avoid. This project is designed to test and refine the best possible use of audio-only immersive experiences in feature-length (over 1 hour) of immersive audio, narrative experience. This includes the power of orchestration, the proximity of narrative and dialogue, the use of moving, surrounding or stationary sounds in the stereo and surround sound field. Through this project we intend to take demonstrative prototypes of the Audie format to first-class surround sound and mixing engineers around the world to explore the possibilities of the format, push the boundaries of the creativity of orchestration and sound synthesis, and discover the best possible quality of experience and immersive sound capacity for the imagination of listeners on a multitude of different listening devices - from headphones, to speakers to cinematic surround sound systems. The outputs of the project will allow us to discover the best way to create more Audies, knowing that audiences are most able to find the format an enjoyable listening experience: whether that's to relax and escape or to experience new immersive worlds in their full imaginative possibilities.
