Vertical farming brings significant benefits to fresh produce production including reductions in waste, carbon emissions, water and pesticide-usage, and food-miles. However, the current generation of farms cannot deliver the productivity needed at large-scale to compete effectively with existing mass-market supply chains. In this 6-month feasibility project, Acer Resources will address the core of this issue by using Machine Learning to develop the technologies that will enable our farms to compete directly with mass-market supply chains. Our first commercial products will be baby leaf packs for retail and processed head lettuce for foodservice. The existing markets for these products are very large, both in the UK and internationally. The technology developed in this project will allow Acer to precisely control the temperature, humidity, and CO2 in the farm. Acer will thereby be able to: * Shrink the space between the racks and maximise production density. * Deliver novel, low-energy cultivation processes that both maximise yields and minimise emissions/costs. * Integrate a range of other novel technologies, such as farm automation and robotics. This project will bring together world-class partners and collaborators, combining world-leading AI/ML expertise (MAG-AI) with Acer's proven track record delivering large-scale vertical farms. Using this project's technology, each of Acer's farms will produce 3-4 tonnes/day of nutrient-rich food, and the successful development of our technology will increase the production of low-emission fresh produce, not just in the UK, but globally. This project therefore supports the Government's goals in the National AI Strategy through wider AI adoption across agriculture, as well as the National Food Strategy, Levelling-Up, and the transition to Net Zero.
