Aquarius is developing a breakthrough approach to automate semiconductor testing for low-volume, high-mix production, a persistent challenge faced by UK chip companies. Today, most automated handlers are designed for mass manufacturing, requiring investments exceeding £100,000 and lengthy integration processes. As a result, over 80% of UK fabless semiconductor businesses still rely on manual loading of devices into test equipment, leading to low throughput, higher labour costs, and long delays in qualifying new products.
This project will design and validate a modular robotic retrofit that attaches directly to existing Automated Test Equipment (ATE). The system uses a collaborative six-axis robot to pick and place devices into test sockets and sort them after testing, with no need for bespoke docking hardware. It can handle multiple chip formats with rapid changeovers, enabling unattended operation for batches ranging from a few hundred to several thousand units.
By reducing manual handling and improving consistency, the retrofit is expected to increase test throughput by almost 300%, cut per-unit test costs by up to 40%, and shorten time-to-market for complex devices by several weeks. These improvements will strengthen the competitiveness of UK chip designers and test service providers while supporting faster innovation cycles in critical sectors such as aerospace, defence, and healthcare.
The project will deliver a validated technical design, performance data from a proof-of-concept demonstration, and a detailed commercial roadmap. Aquarius will work closely with UK semiconductor companies to ensure the solution meets real operational needs and provides a compelling business case for adoption.
This work is expected to contribute directly to the goals of the UK National Semiconductor Strategy by enabling more advanced testing to take place domestically, reducing reliance on overseas facilities. Over time, the approach will help create new skilled jobs, attract investment, and reinforce the UK's position as a hub for advanced semiconductor development. By making flexible, affordable automation accessible to smaller businesses, our innovation will unlock productivity gains across the supply chain and support a more resilient, sustainable and competitive semiconductor industry.
