Alceus Bio is a spinout from the University of Cambridge developing best-in-class, scalable cancer therapies by programming cells to directly disrupt the root drivers of solid cancers. In the UK, there are approximately 400,000 new cases and 170,000 deaths from cancer each year. Despite transformative success of immunotherapies in several cancer types, for many advanced-stage metastatic diseases 5-year survival remains below 20%, creating the need for new safe and effective cancer medicines. Advanced therapies, including cell therapies, offer a novel immunotherapy approach, in which cells can be engineered to target and attack cancer through alternative mechanisms. Current cell therapies show promise but are constrained by only targeting cell surface targets which are not required for cancer cell survival, leading to inevitable cancer resistance. Alceus Bio has developed a novel cell therapy-based approach to target key intracellular drivers of solid cancers, thereby preventing cancer resistance. The goal of this project is to extend the approach, developing therapeutic candidates against new targets for deployment in cell therapies for hard-to-treat advanced cancers.
