Small businesses are the engine of the UK economy, yet many operate without the financial clarity needed to make confident decisions. Founders frequently face critical choices about spending, hiring, or risk often under pressure and without the time or tools to fully interpret their financial position. Traditional solutions are too complex, too reactive, or simply unaffordable for most early-stage teams. This project introduces a new approach to delivering financial insight to small and growing businesses. Rather than adding more dashboards or reports, we're building an intelligent, explainable system that gives founders plain-language answers to real questions such as "Can I afford to hire in Q2?" or "What happens to my runway if this invoice is delayed?" Using recent advances in data modelling and machine learning, the platform constructs a structured view of a company's financial position based on real-time inputs from tools like bank feeds, accounting software, and payment systems. This structured representation enables fast, auditable answers grounded in reconciled data. It is designed to work alongside existing systems and deliver value without requiring a finance background. Development will take place over six months, including technical validation and real-world testing with a pilot group of UK-based SMEs. The system is being developed in close collaboration with UK business owners, informed by user research into where current tools fall short and how better support could improve daily decision-making. Usability, transparency, and trust are central to the design. We are applying for public funding to accelerate this work and meet critical validation milestones. Without this support, development would progress more slowly and the market may be overtaken by less reliable or less explainable alternatives. The long-term vision is to give every small business access to CFO-level financial clarity without the cost or complexity. This has the potential to reduce stress, improve survival rates, and unlock smarter, more sustainable growth for founders across the UK. The broader societal benefit is a stronger, more resilient SME sector: one that is better equipped to handle uncertainty, manage resources, and contribute meaningfully to the UK economy.
