TAPACO project will address the challenge of producing efficient and environmentally friendly perforated thermoplastic composite sheets with tailored acoustic properties for noise attenuation. It will develop the methodology and hardware for creating the specified perforation pattern in the composite panels without disturbing and cutting the load bearing fibres. The developed technologies will enable the fabrication of more integrated, lightweight and multifunctional structures. The project will build a demonstrator line where the process will be applied in suitable scale to assess feasibility and effectiveness. Initially, we will consider load bearing noise absorbing liners but the developed technologies and the corresponding technical and scientific know-how will allow to extend the methodology to other industrial sectors. The developed capabilities will increase the attractiveness of thermoplastic composites in relevant applications as they are easily recyclable and can readily contribute to circular economy.

This project brings together the diverse strengths and capabilities of an SME, Large Company and Academia to develop a practical means of designing and manufacturing aerostructural composite components via a novel overmoulding process. The multi-component systems developed will be thermoplastic-composite based providing optimised integrated structures with the economic benefits of short cycle production times. The ultimate aim is to provide aerospace manufacturers with creditable commercial alternatives to metallic or thermoset composite parts as part of an overall optimised multi-material strategy for the industry.
