The absence of local flax processing capabilities in the UK and Ireland hampers the creative industries, particularly film and fashion, which rely on linen for costumes and props. This project seeks to address this gap by pioneering a revolutionary method for processing flax into long fibre linen, marking the most significant advancement in flax processing in over 130 years. As the inaugural venture of Athena Blue, a startup founded by experienced engineers, it aims to develop proprietary technology to decarbonise industries by replacing synthetic products with carbon-sequestering natural alternatives. The scalable nature of the technology holds promise for industrial-scale production, with anticipated benefits for micro and small fibre producers like Mallon Linen. The affordable small-scale processing unit, expected to be commercialised swiftly, could usher in immediate market penetration and generate crucial revenue for further technology scaling.
