This project is to help the Luing Cattle Society adopt innovative new technology to expand their breed development program for the genetic improvement of their members’ herds (over 7,000 registered breeding females from 100 herds). This innovative group of hill cattle breeders have already developed a unique Dam Classification Scheme which has run for 10 years, but want to take this to the next level by creating a web-based database that would make results freely accessible to all breeders and customers. The project will also establish a specifically designed performance recording program for the Luing breed. Working with ABRI, who have a proven global track record in this field (including work with some of the major breeds in the UK), the Luing Cattle Society intend to develop a set of new Estimated Breeding Values to help breeders improve fertility, longevity, calving ability and milkiness of this native hill breed of Scotland. This project is innovative because some of the EBVs that are intended to be used have not been seen in the UK before and, uniquely, an Index value will not be used.
