The project is focused on growing the industrial biotechnology (IB) and bio-based manufacturing cluster in Scotland through support for training, collaboration and investment readiness. IB and bio-based manufacturing are nascent sectors in Scotland with high growth potential. The 2015 BEIS SIA for the region noted its emerging international reputation for IB. Scotland has a National Plan for Industrial Biotechnology (NPIB), endorsed by the Scottish Government with ambitious targets of £1.2bn in associated turnover, \>£360m in GVA and 4,000 high value STEM jobs by 2025\. Scotland has \>30m tonnes of biomass, the critical sustainable feedstock for IB processes. The nation also has world-class research and facilities in relevant disciplines.
The cluster is diverse but fragmented embracing innovators and manufacturers of commodity and speciality chemicals, food and feed, medicines, textiles, consumer products and construction materials. Companies exploit local feedstocks such as consumer waste, food and drink residues, forestry, marine and agricultural by-products. Scotland needs to build a stronger pipeline of start-ups and spinouts and to help SMEs scale towards manufacture -- a frequent point of failure for bio-based manufacturing businesses.
The Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) is the cluster management organisation (CMO) for Scotland's IB and bio-based manufacturing sector, connecting industry, academia and government to bring new processes and products to the global market. IBioIC is the key actor in delivering Scotland's NPIB and facilitates collaborations, provides scale-up capabilities, creates networks, and develops skills and training to support sector growth. As CMO, IBioIC will deliver activities to address challenges restraining cluster growth including:
**Connect and Collaborate** -- To support and seed collaborative R&D opportunities through challenge-based workshops, generating high quality applications for future Launchpad and Innovate UK funding calls.
**Business Insights** -- Partnership working to deliver a 'one-stop-shop' support system for new businesses providing bespoke advice around markets, regulation, techno-economic assessment and life cycle analysis and supply chain integration.
**Train to Scale** -- Specialist training to equip bio-entrepreneurs with the skills needed to take bio-based innovations towards industrial application. Biotechnology companies often fail to make the transition from R&D to manufacturing due to different skills requirements;
**Invest to Grow** - Creating an Investor Forum and Annual Innovation Showcase to provide entrepreneurs and new companies access to 'green' investors and potential partners and raising the profile of the cluster.
**Promote and Celebrate** - Promotion of Launchpad funding opportunities, success stories and impacts, championing diversity and highlighting the range of exciting career opportunities.
