Fair Isle is Uk's most remote inhabited island and as such is not on the National Grid. The islanders along with The National Trust for Scotland, Reyrolle developed and built the UK's first commercial windmill in 1983. The Fair Isle Electricity Company was formed to run and maintain the system when control was handed over to the islanders in 2000. The system developed was innovative at the time but is now becoming outdated and replacement parts are more difficult to find. Whilst we are looking at many ways of improving and updating the system the islanders feel that an important part of our system is how we heat our homes using domestic heating controllers which allow surplus power from wind generation to go into storage heaters. These controllers are now needing to be replaced and we are looking at how new technology can be used to do the job
