SMEs account for 97% of businesses in food and drink manufacturing, 22% of the turnover and 33% of employment. For many of these businesses, Production Automation remains elusive through cost, complexity or because of the compromises in flexibility and quality that are inherent in manufacturing at scale. The resulting gap in productivity is a huge factor holding back growth and innovation in this sector. The Quirky Chocolate founder is determined to apply her own innovative approach to solve this challenge. As the business scales, she is determined to ensure that the company values of inclusivity and creativity are not lost. By approaching the problem in a more holistic way, Quirky Chocolate is determined to ensure the artisan approach to hand finishing is not lost in the automation process. Working with experienced consultants, technology partners and production systems engineering businesses, this project will identify and deliver flexible affordable semi-automation for the wrapping and the packaging phase of the Quirky Chocolate production process. The resulting solution is envisaged as providing a routemap for similar businesses to look at scaling productivity through automation without loss of flexibility and quality.
