Collaborative R&D
This project, completed in April 2012 developed several tools for the regenerative medicine sector. Named the Realise project this innovative collaboration has provided a web-based toolkit to support the development of regenerative medicine therapies from early development through to spin out and full commercialisation. The Scottish Stem Cell Network has led the project consortium which is made up of three partners, Roslin Cells, The ESRC Innogen centre at University of Edinburgh and KLCE consulting Ltd. This project has captured the expertise of thought leaders within the Science and Technology, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Business and Finance sectors in the UK, with representation from clinical, academic and Industry leaders. Expert groups were convened with those contributing working to distil the myriad of activities involved in developing a stem-cell therapy from bench to bedside into the most important steps. Throughout the project, 15 expert user group meetings and 5 Progress to Therapy workshops involving thought leaders from all sectors of the Regenerative medicine community across the United Kingdom and internationally were conducted and the outputs formatted into the action steps of the tool. The Realise tool will serve as a guide to the key actions that someone with a novel idea will have to take in order to move to a commercial endpoint. There are several strands to this work. Roslin Cells have been utilising the tool to develop Product Development and Commercialisation plans for three products currently in development. This has meant we have been able to challenge the utility of the tool at key points in its development. KLCE Consulting have brought an economic modelling approach to the toolkit which will help users to model their funding needs and to make decisions on the scale of their company The Innogen Team from the ESCR Innogen centre at University of Edinburgh have developed bespoke models of the Value systems in regenerative medicine and will be publishing several papers as a result of their innovative work. Links from the Realise website will take you to the Innogen contributions to REALISE, which provide a number of visual and text based documents to help you explore in some detail the business models, value chains and potential routes to market or the clinic for three different types of regenerative medicine products. These can be used to identify the various opportunities and challenges along the product development pathway, as well as the key sources of value under different scenarios. Used in conjunction with the REALISE tool, these documents provide a more systemic description and analysis of the commercialisation options for regenerative medicine. Innogen has been working closely with key regulatory, scientific, policy and commercialisation experts in the regenerative medicine field, including those involved in the three REALISE case studies, to provide these tools.
