Caledonian Climate Partners (CCP) is excited to partner with fellow leading nature positive organisations on removing barriers to significantly scale investment in peatland restoration.
Between CCP and partner organisations New Gradient, the IUCN Peatland Code, the Soil Association and the Great North Bog Initiative there is a unique full picture view from initiating and delivering restoration projects on the ground, to verifying carbon units, to leveraging private investment to fund nature positive peatland restoration. This granular and holistic understanding of the whole peatland restoration industry has identified the opportunity to leverage technology to reduce long term risk, and scale investor confidence and engagement in peatland restoration across the UK.
The rationale for the focus on peatland restoration is that it provides a highly effective climate change and nature based solution on a significant scale. Peatlands cover just three 3 % of the world's land area yet they hold nearly 30% of all carbon stored on land. However, when a peatland becomes damaged or dries out, inevitably due to human impact, it begins releasing carbon dioxide, rather than absorbing it. The good news is that restoration brings almost immediate benefits, at scale. Within a few months, carbon emissions are reduced by up to three tonnes per hectare, and peatland's natural role of absorbing carbon is restored. Caledonian Climate Partnership is excited about the opportunity that this grant provides to significantly scale investment in peatland restoration via delivering on three objectives:
\* Advancing Peatland Restoration with AI and drone technology
\* Peatland Code Annual Verification
\* Optimising post restoration maintenance
