Glox Therapeutics develops precision antibiotics aiming to target drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria.
Glox Therapeutics is a newly formed company that is a joint spinout between the University of Glasgow and the University of Oxford. Glox will address the global threat of AMR infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria through the development of engineered protein bacteriocins (PBs) which are potent, narrow-spectrum antibiotics. Pls are naturally-produced proteins toxins that are plasmid or chromosomally-encoded and released by bacteria that target their neighbours. Particularly prevalent amongst Gram-negative bacteria, PBs are part of the armory used to fend off competitors during competition for space and nutrients. The narrow-killing spectrum of these molecules allowing a specific pathogen to be targeted has two major advantages over conventional antibiotics. Firstly, there is no selection for resistance determinants in the wider microbial community and secondly, there is no collateral damage to the microbiome.
