SensFish taps into the issue of increasingly prevalent sustainability issue of overfishing, by providing a technical solution consisting of a range of adequate digital technologies to support decision-making. The solution enables real-time data related to the quantity, location and types of fish in the ocean.
Overfishing has become a major and significant problem in Scotland, the UK and globally. Scottish Government, for example, is often bound to make closures of certain areas of the ocean in order to protect its fish species from extinction (e.g., cod). Following this, the Scottish government expresses the need for fisheries management improvement to be able to exercise more accurate and effective decision-making within the Scottish blue economy, in line with the SDGs introduced by the UN (especially, goals 8 and 14). This is to transform the economy and society to thrive within the planet's sustainable limits in Scotland and around the globe.
With Scotland being one of the worst countries in Europe for overfishing, it is essential to tap into the problem starting in that location. Scottish sea area is six times bigger than its land mass, while the coastline runs for 18.000 km, where 5 km of that, inhabits over 40% of all the Scottish population. This massively contributes to the countries' economy -- for example in 2020 alone, the fish export amounts to over 30 million tonnes. These activities secure 75.500 jobs in the blue Scottish economy. From this research we can see that to protect both the ocean biodiversity, but also fishing as an economic activity, it is absolutely crucial to provide and enable better, real-time understanding of the situation of the ocean.
SensFish provides a satellite-imagery-based solution that generates data through a combination of sensors, and other instruments, operating from a satellite in GEO orbit. The collected data feeds into a cloud, where it is stored, processed, analysed and enabled for access through a user-friendly platform in real time.
