Small Business Research Initiative
This project aims to demonstrate the first battery-free fully wireless-powered sensing network for use on rolling stock maintenance-critical parts. By retrofitting the proposed gateway to an electric train bogie, many sensors can be powered directly, in locations where there are no other sources of power, wiring, or are maintenance-accessible. Through an all-wireless interface, power will be provided to the devices, with the sensor data on temperature, strain, and/or vibrations, relayed back through a license-free (e.g. Bluetooth) RF link. The gateway then provides realtime preventative maintenance data, as well as allows maintenance personnel to directly triangulate and locate faults. Unlike existing rail or vehicular sensors, there is no constraint on the number of sensors deployed for a single gateway. As such, real-time data can be collected at a higher spatial resolution than all existing solutions The project will be led by RX WaTT, a university of Glasgow spin-out, backed by 5+ years of research in RF-enabled battery-free wireless sensing. Our patented IP provides the first means for high-sensitivtiy RF power harvesting in harsh environments using multi-functional antenna arrays. With strong traction from rail end-users and light-rail RTOs, our primary aim is to deliver the first rail-certified battery-free wireless-powered sensing product with real-time connectivity and data reporting.
