**DT-RISE** is an exciting new project that brings together two cutting-edge technologies **Digital Twins (DT)** and **Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS)** to help make wireless connectivity smarter, greener, and more adaptable for the future.
As our demand for reliable internet keeps growing, so does the energy footprint of mobile networks. But not every location especially rural, remote, or emergency-prone areas can support traditional infrastructure like large base stations. That's where DT-RISE comes in.
RIS is a new type of technology that can reflect and redirect wireless signals, like a smart mirror for radio waves. It doesn't generate its own signal but helps boost or steer existing ones, all using very little power. In this project, we're going a step further by developing a **self-powered RIS system** powered by solar making it ideal for locations with limited access to electricity or fibre networks.
To make this system really intelligent, we're pairing it with **Digital Twin technology**. This means we'll build a virtual model of the RIS system and its environment, which can simulate and predict how the real-world network behaves. The twin constantly learns and updates itself based on data from the field, allowing us to adjust how the RIS behaves in real time.
We're also making DT-RISE compatible with **Open RAN**, a global movement toward open and modular mobile networks. This ensures that our system can work alongside existing and future network setups, giving it a clear path to real-world deployment.
The project will deliver a working prototype of the RIS control platform, show how Digital Twins can improve energy efficiency and signal coverage, and demonstrate how this setup can plug into modern mobile networks using open interfaces.
We believe DT-RISE could be a game-changer for sustainable connectivity whether it's bringing broadband to remote areas, supporting emergency services after a disaster, or helping smart cities manage growing data demand without growing their carbon footprint.
This project is a vision to build practical, intelligent, and low-energy communication solutions for the future of global connectivity.
