The current carrying capacity of overhead transmission, and distribution (T+D) lines has become a key constraint for global electrification. Global electricity demand is due to increase 75-150% 2022-2050 (IEA,2022). The current mechanisms to increase T+D capacity are based on large infrastructure projects such as reconductoring, taking 3-7 years, costing £300k/km or building new lines (7-10 years, £1mn+/km).
More cost-effective ways to increase transmission and distribution capacity are required. This project involves the development of an automated coating systems for overhead lines, configured to deploy a specialised photonic coating which increases the capacity of overhead lines. This will permit a transition from a T+D uprating paradigm of heavy infrastructure projects to one of advanced mechatronics and functional coatings.
