Company description

Hexigone Inhibitors develops and manufactures pigments that are free of chrome, designed to prevent corrosion.

Hexigone Inhibitors Ltd was formed in June 2016 as a result of winning the Armourers & Brasiers' 2016 Materials Science Venture Prize for its smart release Cr(VI)-free corrosion inhibitor for coated steel products. The innovation addresses an urgent need of the coil coating industry as the leading inhibitor products based on Cr(VI) will be banned by the EU in 2019 due to toxicity.

Project impact

Since it's formation in June 2016 the team have gone on to leverage £50k in seed investment, a Royal Society Brian Mercer Feasibility Award (£30k) and a Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellowship (£60k). The technology is patented and is currently in the PCT phase. During 2017 it is expected that 1x doctoral level FTE will be created in the Swansea region. 2019 - The company now has several employees based in the Swansea region, has raised over £1m in private investment and is working globally with 20 international partners https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-47468201?intlink_from_url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/c52ew8q50z2t/wales-business&link_location=live-reporting-story One of the original team has now become a Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence at Swansea University
